    About This Show

Two bananas wake up duct-taped to the wall of an art gallery. Three artists, two auctions, one audience. Get ready to bid! An award-winning clown-fruit mash-up about making art, surviving and chasing mass a-peel. In a world that values youth, perfection and mass production, can two bruised bananas go the distance? Ripe with potential, can they find their place before they're put up for sale? Find out how starving these artists truly are. Winner of the Melbourne Fringe Tour Ready Award and nominated for Best in Theatre, 2025. 'Clowning at the 11th level of intensity' ****1/2 (TheatreThoughtsAus.com).

"How does one write about two sentient bananas taped to a wall discovering they are "art"? This is the precise conundrum one faces when making sense of How To Art, the New Zealand sensation confusing the nation. At first glance, the piece seems to be a clever bit of fruit clowning, though it quickly becomes apparent that there may be more to it once you peel back the layers. What is art? Who gets to say what art is? And how do you ascribe value to that ephemeral artistic quality? There is much more to ponder here than one might originally expect when signing up to see a show about two bananas."

"I gave up on working full time in a creative field almost before I started. Self-doubt… was I good enough… when/would I get paid? How to Art sums up the experience perfectly. Artist as art as artist as art in a never ending loop at the hands of an audience deciding for them if it’s worth anything. Sold! A full hour of non stop laughter and awe as three masterful clowns journey through the peaks and pits of being and selling their own art. If you’ve ever made anything, or given up on making anything, see this show. Do it."

"Absolutely insane. Every time I'd think I knew what was going on there would be a twist that took things in a totally new direction. The physical comedy was superb. Don't read more about the plot just be prepared for a silly, hilarious, fruity, quirky, charming, absurd 60 minute that will feel like 10. Easily buy tickets now it sells out (for good reason)"

"Went Friday night, having been given flyers by the performers a few evenings before. We should have known then quite how brilliant the show would be as they were TOTALLY in character on Candlemaker Row. This is a trojan horse of a show - clever, funny, poignant, thought provoking. We've had big conversations about it's humour, the meaning of art, audiences, commercialism and staging. How to Art unfolds with a blend of clowning, dance, slapstick and became the best show we've seen this Fringe. So pleased they came all the way from New Zealand."
